Two Survivors

Two Survivors
© Rabbi Menachem Creditor
inspired by The Quarrel*

They can't look at each other,
so much they wish to look into each other's eyes.

Trembling hands,
grasping with desperation at each other's arms,
unsure and fumbling,
wondering if what's been lost
might yet be hiding
in the fold of an old friend's coat.

The desired connection
of these two aching souls,
is impossible to endure.
For these lost, hurt survivors
the other's eyes hold too much.

But where even God fails,
a sacred tune holds them,
binds them despite the pain.
Through the pain.

A niggun holds them in reverie,
lost in remembered communion,
until they open their eyes.
